Room has to be well ventilated. Installation in areas without ventilation is extremely dangerous since hydrogen gas is emitted during charging and is highly inflammable. If in an air conditioned room, there should be an air exchange at least once every 4 hours. If installed in a cubicle or enclosure, it should have louvers or holes for ventilation.
Unpack batteries and check for any damage, breakage, or leakage. Check for even hairline cracks. It’s extremely dangerous to install damaged batteries – it can lead to fires and explosions. Check if accessories like nuts and bolts are present in carton.
If the number of batteries are greater than two and is to be connected in a string, the OCV of all batteries should be in range of ± 0.03V of each other. In case it is beyond ± 0.03V, then the process of “Battery Charge Equalisation” to be followed.
Battery rack should be insulated from the ground by placing rubber strips/PVC sheets/wooden blocks or use any insulating material. Never place batteries on the ground. If rack is not available, place the batteries on a rubber sheet or wooden board or any insulating material. Batteries placed on a rack, that is not insulated or placed directly on the ground will discharge quickly due to grounding.
Batteries on the rack should be placed at least 10mm apart. Rack should be positioned in such a way that both sides of rack are accessible for maintenance purpose. Rack should not be near any heat source.
Size and cross section of the inter battery connecting links should be exactly same length and thickness and should have the required current carrying capacity.
All nuts and bolts should be tightened uniformly preferably with a torque wrench. Apply petroleum jelly to the terminals to prevent corrosion and improve conductance.
Check charging current of the UPS/Charger/device. It should be at least 10% of battery rating on a single string.
Avoid connecting batteries in parallel strings. If at all parallel strings have to be used, then a maximum of 4 strings can be connected in subject to following conditions:* Batteries should be of same Ah capacity and from same manufacturing batch.* DC power supply for charging to each string should be separate.* Cable length/cross section to be uniform across all strings.* Use torque wrench compulsory to get uniform tightening of the bolts. Check the manufacturer’s specification sheet for torque values.
